"For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind". 2Timothy 1:7 KJV
I have dreamed of making my living creating landscape oil paintings
since I first picked up the medium growing up in Napa, California. At
the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, I was introduced to
plein air painting in the California Impressionist style by notable
artists Brian Blood and Randall Sexton. The bold, expressive
brushstrokes and vibrant color that characterize this style appealed to
me instantly and heavily influences me to this day. I earned my BFA in
Computer Animation and created artwork in the computer games industry
for nearly 9 years.
In late 2014 I moved from California with my wife Patti to pursue
adventure, to live out the dream of the American West, and of course to
paint! We truly enjoy Montana and I have painted much of Glacier
National Park in our short time here and show my work in several local
galleries.
I strive to capture the essence, vibrancy, and energy of a scene that
I paint from life. Being immersed in your subject is truly the best
way to do that. Painting outdoors is my favorite way of painting as you
can have a closer connection with what you are painting. When what you
are feeling about the scene can be conveyed on the canvas, you've
succeeded. I appreciate the challenges which of course are the changing
light, varying weather, and any manner of noise or distraction. I try
not to let the challenges overwhelm me but rather embrace them. You
have more of a time pressure when painting outdoors as the light changes
so quickly as opposed to the studio where you are in a much more
controlled environment. But sometimes this added pressure can lead to
true gems.
